Ex-Red Denis Irwin says former team-mate and Wigan boss Steve Bruce is of unquestionable integrity, and believes United face a tough battle to clinch the title…
I’ve not spoken to my old pal Brucey in the lead up to this game, but one thing I’m sure of is that he will want his team to win on Sunday, regardless of the fact he is a legend at Old Trafford.
The Premier League is such these days that every player, manager and fans wants to win every game, and Steve Bruce will want to do his very best for Wigan. They are safe, so they’re not playing with any pressure. They will train as normal and I’m sure Brucey will give his players the usual rousing team-talk. He’s certainly won’t ask them to ease up, so they’ll be a tough nut to crack.
Brucey has got them defensively well organised, especially on home territory. He says they are going to try and win the game, and I wouldn’t expect any other approach. Sir Alex knows it’ll be a difficult game on a pitch that is far from ideal, although it’s much better than it was during the winter months.
The good thing is the title is in our own hands. We need to do what they’ve done all season: be positive. We’ve played some cracking football this year and most neutrals would say we deserve to win the title. Until we do it we can’t claim to be the best in the league, that’s why we have to go to Wigan and finish the job.
